What is the point of being busy if we aren't being productive? A lot of people think being busy is a good thing, but there's a huge difference between being busy and being productive. I’m sure you can guess which is better. Being busy is one of the ways we poorly measure our worth as a society.
Overview
Here’s why being busy is ruining your life:
The list just keeps growing;
You push things to the end of your day;
You fail to be present;
You have no energy;
You don’t think strategically.
Let’s dive in!
1.) The list just keeps growing
We have this idea that having 25 things on our to-do list is admirable, even though 95% of the time people are only accomplishing two or three of those to-do’s.
Even worse, sometimes none of them are accomplished. And then comes the worst part: this to-do list is used as an excuse to not engage in other things in our lives, such as hanging out with loved ones, engaging in more critical projects, etc.
And there’s a big domino effect that starts to happen here, as we fail to actually check things off that to-do list. It starts getting longer and longer and longer, and when this happens there's another compounding effect that occurs. Because of the size of the list, we start to get intimidated and overwhelmed. Eventually we become paralyzed and fail to do anything at all.
It’s a catch-22.
